As 2026 reaches the halfway mark, the display industry finds itself in a nuanced moment—global panel demand is being revised downward and end-user consumption remains sluggish, yet OLED production lines are ramping up en masse and industrial HMI is posting double-digit growth, revealing structural opportunities beneath the surface.
Industry Overview: Under Pressure but Not Pessimistic
Omdia's June report revised the year-on-year decline in global display panel demand for 2026 upward from 2% to 6%, with the pressure concentrated in the TV and large-size segment; small-to-medium-size applications in industrial control, automotive, and medical fields remain relatively insulated. On pricing, RUNTO (Luotu Technology) projects a full-year trajectory of “Q1 up, Q2 flat, Q3 down, Q4 flat.” TV panel prices are expected to turn downward in July, but a sharp drop is unlikely, as major panel makers are already proactively curbing production to stabilize prices.
Monochrome LCD: Niche but Irreplaceable
The Chinese market was approximately RMB 4.86 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach RMB 5.03 billion in 2026, characterized by inelastic demand and low cyclicality. In applications such as industrial instruments, smart meters, medical devices, and elevator panels, monochrome displays remain irreplaceable thanks to their ultra-low power consumption, high reliability, wide operating temperature range, and extremely low cost. The technology continues to evolve: standby power consumption can be driven below 10 μA, enabling coin-cell battery life of up to 8 years; wide-temperature solutions address the pain point of screen blackout in northern winters; and the 9-inch form factor is emerging as the “golden size” for standardized industrial HMI modules.
TFT-LCD: Stock Optimization, OLED Substitution Still Distant
The Chinese market stood at RMB 319.2 billion in 2025 with 3.06% growth, transitioning from volume expansion to stock optimization. OLED substitution is the biggest variable—BOE's B16 line began mass production in June, Samsung's A6 line is slated for July, and mid-size OLED panel prices are projected to drop over 30% by the end of 2027. However, current OLED penetration remains only 6% in notebooks and 3% in monitors, leaving LCD as the dominant force for the next 3–5 years. Mini LED backlighting serves as TFT-LCD's “moat” in the premium segment—Mini LED monitor sales above the RMB 3,000 price point grew over 50% year-on-year.
OLED: The Inflection Point of Scale Adoption
2026 marks the inaugural mass-production year for mid-size OLED. With Gen 8.6 lines coming online in rapid succession, UbiResearch projects global IT-use OLED shipments to grow from 24 million units in 2025 to 53 million units in 2029, a CAGR exceeding 22%. Apple is rumored to launch an OLED MacBook Pro by year-end, and mainstream PC brands are accelerating their OLED adoption. During the 618 shopping festival, online OLED monitor sales surged 86% year-on-year—the fastest growth rate among all display technologies.
